Asia is home to literally thousands of fascinating island destinations. Some, such as Phuket, Bali & Sri Lanka, are already well established as deservedly popular tourist spots; but the vast majority are still waiting to be explored. In our latest newsletter we look at three lesser-known Asian islands simply bursting with amazing experiences, but where you can easily avoid the crowds.
Mergui, Myanmar: Southeast Asia’s Next Hot Destination
Myanmar’s remote Mergui Archipelago consists of over 800 islands, many with incredible beaches, set in the serene Andaman Sea and home to isolated communities of Moken sea gypsies. Like the rest of Myanmar, travelers are just beginning to discover this little-visited area that’s perfect for cruising, snorkeling & diving. Jay Tindall spent a few days island hopping by boat and reported back with this fascinating blog post.
Con Dao, Vietnam: History & Tranquility
What once was an island with a turbulent colonial past, Con Dao is now a prime destination with idyllic beaches, French, Portuguese & British colonial architecture, and a scenic national park. Located off Vietnam’s southern coast, Con Dao was put on the tourist map in 2011 with the opening of a luxurious Six Senses resort. Tim Russell enjoys a stay at Six Senses Con Dao and checks out the island’s other attractions in this blog post.
Raja Ampat, Indonesia – Dive into Paradise
Once a sleepy outpost of Indonesia, the four islands of Raja Ampat offer some of Southeast Asia’s best diving, with its coral reefs containing some of the highest marine biodiversity in the world, along with WW2 wrecks. Cruise through turquoise waters on a luxury schooner and enjoy hiking and watersports on virtually untouched islands.
