Cancun, Mexico – August XX, 2012 – Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau reports that more than 7.4 million tourists from around the world have visited Cancun in the past year to explore the riches of the multicultural destination, which mixes glamour, luxury, and world-class amenities with adventure, nature, and gastronomy. This summer Cancun reported an average of 88% hotel occupancy, excellent numbers that haven’t been seen since the destination’s record-breaking summer in 2008. Boasting an abundance of five-star hotels and restaurants, plus a growing number of excellent golf courses and convention centers, Cancun remains Mexico’s number one tourist destination, and the most frequented international destination for American travelers.
Cancun offers visitors four AAA Five Diamond hotels and resorts, the most out of any other international destination ranked. According to Dr. Robert Hueter, director of the Center for Shark Research, Mote Marine Laboratory, about 1,400 whale sharks arrive each summer to the waters just north of Isla Mujeres.
The Cancun Underwater Museum, the world’s largest underwater museum, is a year-round attraction that combines beautiful art and nature, for one of the most unique experiences available. Internationally acclaimed eco-sculptor, Jason de Caires Taylor created the Underwater Museum to facilitate the self-preservation of natural coral reefs in optimal conditions. With this goal, the National Marine Park took the challenge of redirecting tourists from fragile natural habitats to this exhibition of more than 400 magnificent sculptures that come to life in the depths of the sea. This summer, the artist submerged an additional 60 new sculptures to the museum.

Cancun International Airport received more than 7.4 million tourists, compared to 6.8 million that visited at the same time last year.
