 Cancun, Mexico – August XX, 2012 – Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau reports that more than 7.4 million tourists from around the world have visited Cancun in the past year to explore the riches of the multicultural destination, which mixes glamour, luxury, and world-class amenities with adventure, nature, and gastronomy. This summer Cancun reported an average of 88% hotel occupancy, excellent numbers that haven’t been seen since the destination’s record-breaking summer in 2008. Boasting an abundance of five-star hotels and restaurants, plus a growing number of excellent golf courses and convention centers, Cancun remains Mexico’s number one tourist destination, and the most frequented international destination for American travelers.


Cancun offers visitors four AAA Five Diamond hotels and resorts, the most out of any other international destination ranked. According to AAA, Five Diamond Lodgings “feature extraordinary physical attributes and meticulous personalized attention.”  Cancun’s AAA Five Diamond Award-Winning hotels and resorts include The Ritz-Carlton Cancun, Le Blanc Spa Resort, JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa & Zoëtry Paraiso de la Bonita. The AAA Diamond Award is one of the most thorough and trusted rating systems for restaurants and lodgings in the U.S., and Five Diamond status is the highest award level possible. Cancun’s Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort is one of the destination’s premiere entertainment resorts, offering live performances by some of the most popular artists of our time. Last year, Moon Palace hosted multiple Grammy-winning artist Shakira, and then continued their ascension as Cancun’s ultimate concert venue, hosting Enrique Iglesias and Jon Secada this year. Every summer, Cancun’s underwater world attracts visitors from all over the world for a peek at the seasonally-elusive whale sharks. The giant and gentle whale sharks migrate off the waters of the Mexican Caribbean every year, and they are more abundant off the coast of Cancun than anywhere else in the world. The yearly Whale Shark Festival promotes conservation and protection of this beautiful species while offering locals and visitors the once-in-a-lifetime experience of swimming alongside them. According to Dr. Robert Hueter, director of the Center for Shark Research, Mote Marine Laboratory, about 1,400 whale sharks arrive each summer to the waters just north of Isla Mujeres.

The Cancun Underwater Museum, the world’s largest underwater museum, is a year-round attraction that combines beautiful art and nature, for one of the most unique experiences available. Internationally acclaimed eco-sculptor, Jason de Caires Taylor created the Underwater Museum to facilitate the self-preservation of natural coral reefs in optimal conditions. With this goal, the National Marine Park took the challenge of redirecting tourists from fragile natural habitats to this exhibition of more than 400 magnificent sculptures that come to life in the depths of the sea. This summer, the artist submerged an additional 60 new sculptures to the museum.


Although Cancun is hugely popular amongst Americans, the destination is also experiencing incredible growth internationally. The Cancun International Airport saw a large influx of tourists arriving from England, Russia, France and South America, with more than 40 flights from those markets arriving every week to the Cancun airport. There was also a significant growth in domestic tourism, with over 22 Aeromexico flights arriving from Mexico City. Cancun International Airport received more than 7.4 million tourists, compared to 6.8 million that visited at the same time last year.

Cancun is expected to attract millions more before the end of the year as it invites travelers to explore Cancun’s culture and heritage and join the destination as they celebrate the end of the Mayan calendar and the beginning of a new era.
